Exhibition 25 September - 19 October 2002
In Fahd's photographs, the balloon's a moon, a breast, a shadow, a thought,
or just a floating object. These conjunctions are not cliched or even
metaphoric. Instead they make you wonder - an uncool or old-fashioned
faculty in a world of knowing cynicism. Like the author of the book whose
title I remembered from childhood, Fahd is not the flaneur but the
delighted child, open to the transformations of the ordinary world of
simple, surprising conjunctions. Or kisses. In her photos, 'magic hapopens'
but without New-Age flabbiness or naivety.

SHERNA TEPERSON
HOLE THEORY
Exhibition 25 September - 19 October 2002
Hole theory is as much about a process of working as it is about miscasting
an epic plot. In this installation - rather like a mise en scene, Sherna
Teperson brings together a host of unlikely objects she has been probing.
The work takes its cue from an investigation into the body's fear centre
located in the brain.
A slippage begins when she intercepts a diagram of the
molecular structure of adrenalin: in an interchange between molecule and
doodle, 17 carbon atoms in balance with hydrogen, are eclipsed by the
familiar outlines of a certain Mouse.
In this work Mickey is both modulator of events and a multiple. All players
are cast in white with polar fleece props. Whilst appearing in cahoots with
the politics of mishmash, these objects bandy a dualism that is both
impelling and uncanny.
