A suite of large-sized paintings has its starting point in maps for public transportation, that could be found in any city. Without simply copying them, the artist uses them as a starting point for abstract portraits of the particular city- Frankfurt, Venice, Mexico City and St.Petersburg  where colours and textures communicate the associations of the artist.
Andréhn-Schiptjenko is proud to present a new series of paintings by Mari
Rantanen in her third solo show at the gallery. Rantanen (born 1956 in
Helsinki) lives in Stockholm and is a professor in Contemporary Arts at the
Royal College of Art in Stockholm since 1996. She showed earlier at the
gallery in 1995 and 1998.
A catalogue with title Public/Private is accompanying the show. The title
refers to the places that are portrayed, or become starting points for,
Rantanen's paintings depicting the City and the Home.

A series of smaller paintings portray private physical, or sometimes
imagined, spaces, as in Memory Lane, a 5-part painting depicting five
different apartments that Mari Rantanen lived in during her time in New
York. Small oval paintings refer to a window composition that Rantanen could
see from her studio's window in New York.
These works are in their concept new for Rantanen, as they explicitly relate
to existing physical spaces. On the other hand, using of the decorative
element, everything from the Renaissance colour and gold pigments to today's
Pokémon Pikachus, remains. References to popular and high culture, our age
and history, meet and overlap each other on the surface of the paintings.
The show opens on Thursday 26 September, 17-20. For more information or
