Tatyana Murray "Transmutations" at JG Contemporary / James Graham & Sons JG
Contemporary, a department of James Graham & Sons at 1014 Madison Avenue,
3rd Floor and 505 West 28th Street, will hold an exhibition of sculpture by Tatyana
Murray from September 26th, through October 26th, 2002.
There will be a reception
at the third floor gallery of 1014 Madison Avenue on Thursday, September 26th
from 6-8 PM.
Tatyana Murray makes wall-mounted and free-standing sculpture
from Hydrocal and metal. Murray molds the Hydrocal (a white synthetic plaster-like
substance) into biomorphic forms to which she adds color and often velvet flocking.
At times bright and cheerful, othertimes more subtle and subdued, Murray’s use of
color and texture drives the work by commuting cool modernist shapes into visceral
objects with multiple associations. The artist changes straightforward evocations of
nature into expressions of human emotions.
While her earlier work seemed to
have a cheerful take on the natural world, these works possess a sinister edge.
Though still overtly playful sometimes verging on sexy psychedelic fantasies,
Murray has introduced the idea of awe or unease in the face of nature. The
Chelsea space will be transformed into an environment, with over a dozen free-
standing "Candy Flowers" in addition to two large-scale wall mounted pieces. The
uptown gallery will be more restrained, with monochrome wall pieces and a video
projection.
Tatyana Murray will be included in "Concepts for New Sculpture" a group
show at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice this September. She will also be
in a group show this fall in Linn, Austria at the Ferdinand Schmelz Gallery. The
artist is currently working on a large outdoor commission for the Sculpture at
Goodwood permanent collection, located in West Sussex, England. Murray held a
solo show in May, 2001 at Blains Fine Art in London. Her last New York show was at
I-20 Gallery in 1999.
