Das Orgien Mysterien Theater. An overview of several aspects of his Orgien Mysterien Theater. The exhibition consists of documents such as photographies, videos and relics of more recent Aktionen e.g the 107th Aktion held in Prinzendorf (2001) and the lecture/action at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London (2002).
On the 27th September 2002 from 7 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. HERMANN NITSCH
will be present for the preview of the exhibition DAS ORGIEN MYSTERIEN
THEATER at Galerie Fortlaan 17 in Ghent (B).
In 1998, Galerie Fortlaan 17 organised the first solo- exhibition by
HERMANN NITSCH in Belgium. This exhibition took place immediately
after the realisation of the '6 Days Play' in Prinzendorf (A).
In 1957 Hermann Nitsch (1938) wrote down his idea for the ORGIES AND
MYSTERIES THEATRE, which is a theatre play taking place during 6 days
and 6 nights and reuniting all his aspirations. Since 1957 he has been
working on the preparation of the realisation of the '6 Days Play'.
Real events are brought on scene and all five senses of the
participants are being addressed.
During the sixties, Hermann Nitsch formed, together with Gunter Brus,
Rudolf Schwarzkogler and Otto Muhl, the 'Viennese Aktionists'.
In between 1960 and 1966 Nitsch held Aktionen and exhibitions in
Vienna. The consequences of his activities were several processes in
court and he was held in prison.
In 1998 Hermann Nitsch could finally realise his '6 Days Play'.
The work of Nitsch is now already part of art-history, but his work is
still very contemporary, even in 2002.
By organising an exhibition with Hermann Nitsch and the reactions we
receive to our 'Nieuwsperiodiek/Invitation', in 1998 as much as in
2002, it appears that his work is still not without controversies.
For the occasion of his lecture/action held in April 2002 at the
Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, Nitsch wrote a text to elucidate the
aim of the ORGIEN MYSTERIEN THEATER. We published this text to
accompany our 'Nieuwsperiodiek/Invitation' for this exhibition.
For his second solo-exhibition, Hermann Nitsch presents an overview of
several aspects of his ORGIEN MYSTERIEN THEATER. The exhibition
consists of documents such as photographies, videos and relics of more
recent Aktionen e.g the 107th Aktion held in Prinzendorf (2001) and the
lecture/action at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London (2002). This
summer Nitsch organised a Malaktion in Prinzendorf and some of the
paintings from this action are included in this exhibition.
Histrical photographs of the earlier Aktionen in the sixties, drawings
and a Laboratory of 'taste and smell' puts the more recent work in
perspective.
