comunicato stampa

The exhibition I wish I were you combines objects, painting, and drawing of artists Alexandra Gaul and Claudia Annette Maier. Both artistic positions are informed by a peculiar tendency towards the grotesque and the comic which in varying approaches and expressions also generates a melancholic moment.

Alexandra Gaul's quietly staged objects often combine handpicked artefacts and specifically produced elements (occasionally ceramic). They assume a strange redesignated unity and lead into the environment of things and humans. An abstract horse's torso lies with human utensils in a velvet casket surrounded by a glass case. The idea of a feretory appears obvious as well as absurd. Two heaps made of ceramic vermicular forms which merely provide insight into its interior and mask the unobstructed view stand their ground as if they have always been there.

Similarly, Claudia Annette Maier presents a manifestation of ambivalence in her subversive pictures. They constitute a finite state of destruction of the painting's surface which is preceded by a long process of layering. These 'buried images', left-behind reliefs, are subject to an inner logic of constructive destruction / reshaping and show the painting's motif at the same time. In addition, scenic sketches on paper focus on recapturing the line which boldly defies consolidated structures. The impression of the comic and grotesque – in an effort to comprehend the presence of something through absence (or vice versa) – results from pictorial situations which permit a glance in both directions. They allow the viewer to change her/his point of view and perspective.
