In Your Face. Classically a portrait encapsulates the identity of its subject revealing his social status and historical signifiers, trapping the face in a pose that weakens its enigmatic content. Stripped from these elements, Mauri's paintings do not function as portraits, they create a stage for questioning the very nature of portraiture and the possibility of defining the identity of his subjects through their physiognomy alone.
"IN YOUR FACE"
Egizio's Project is proud to present "In Your Face", a series of new
paintings by Sebastiano Mauri.
For the past two years Sebastiano Mauri has been exclusively painting faces
over a monochromatic background. His subjects present no context (haircut,
clothes, posture, surroundings) that might place them in a specific time
frame, space or social class. Each might be a Roman slave, a member of the
Hell's Angels, a stripper or a president. Reminiscent of masks, they
paradoxically lack any of the elements that normally mask a person. Both
remote and imposing these faces stare back at the viewer expressionless. In
this new series the faces seem to emerge from a light fog, as if they were
suspended in a primordial or ultimate void.
In the pictures: 'Antonio', 2002.
