Two exhibitions

Heidelberger Kunstverein, Heidelberg

Personal Stories is a one-person show by Danish performance and video artist Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen. In the early works she sets the focus on herself and her family, later on she has exchanged real people with artificial characters to personify biographical details of her own life. When entering the gallery the visitor is facing a constellation of objects that might seem incoherent on the first sight. They are the humourous works of Lasse Schmidt-Hansen.

Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen
Personal Stories

At the end of the year, the Heidelberger Kunstverein will stage the first German one-person show by Danish performance, video and object artist Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen. Cuenca Rasmussen has been using biographical elements unsentimentally in her art for many years and these will form the basis of the new work.

The title of the current exhibition series of the Heidelberger Kunstverein, “Personal Stories“, is actually a perfect fit for Cuenca Rasmussen. In the early pieces, shown in the exhibition, she sets the focus on herself and her family in two video pieces, one showing a dancing performance she intensively practised with her family, the other one focusing on the family itself and the interpersonal relationships. In the later pieces she has exchanged real people with artificial characters to personify biographical details of her own life and reveals her own debate about ethnicity, gender roles and subtle oppression.

The exhibition will be presented in the hall.

Lasse Schmidt Hansen

After studying at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, Schmidt-Hansen started his career with understated humour, exhibiting almost invisible objects in Stuttgart, Amsterdam and Berlin. One of these early series was themed around a non-existent ISO standard based on the heights at which works of art are hung.

When entering the gallery of the Heidelberger Kunstverein the visitor is facing a constellation of objects that might seem incoherent on the first sight. There is a pile of paper with the final draft of the exhibition and multiple other, not finalized options beneath in one corner. Three glass cubes stand on the floor and one sees eight pages with short despcriptions of objects. All these pieces are not meant to symbolize great and important statements but rather try to find out in a very modest and silent way how objects become pieces, how materials like glass and wood turn into art through meaning. And if so, explore the questions where this meaning comes from? Lasse Schmidt Hansen tries to answer these questions with his simple constellations and despite his reservation has been presented in many important exhibitions such as the Biennale for contemporary art in Athens (2009), the Daimler Contemporary Collection in Berlin (2009 and 2010) and the Frankfurter Kunstverein (2007).

The exhibition will be presented on the gallery (first floor).
