Concepts for New Sculpture

Sculpture at Goodwood is commissioning sculptors to produce maquettes, or small-scale thinking models of works that are intended to be realised in large versions. Some of these models are made as limited editions and can be treated as finished works in their own right, assuming an identity as small-scale sculpture, while others are intended as 'dress rehearsals' for more ambitious, monumental works. The project allows professionals and private collectors to view a much broader range of work and to exercise their imaginations by dreaming these small-scale exercises into a larger reality. Sculpture at Goodwood has always availed itself of cutting-edge visual solutions and in some instances these small sculptures can be seen virtually alongside their monumental versions already installed. The Concepts project is not only advantageous to those willing to commission works, for the artist also benefit. As Wilfred Cass explains, "The editions give the artists and their agents more exposure, and the fact that more artists' work can be seen in this context, contributes greatly to the thrust of the scheme, which is to encourage more people to commission British sculptors to work on a large scale."

In keeping with its working philosophy of embracing the best of contemporary design as well as the finest sculpture, Sculpture at Goodwood commissioned the architect Craig Downie and designer Alex Welch to devise a simple low-cost solution that would facilitate the display of the models and which could be easily and economically reproduced anywhere in the world. The result is an elegant, airy, geometric framework that allows each object to breathe in its own space. The plan is to allow the Concepts project to tour galleries around the world as an exhibition in its own right, promoting British sculptural imagination to an international audience.

The thinking models are shown in the Concept Gallery at Goodwood where they are used primarily in planning future commissions. Admission to the Concept Gallery for collectors and professionals wishing to commission sculpture is strictly by appointment.
