Fluxus East

Fluxus was received in many different ways, sometimes through personal contacts, leading to very diverse Fluxus actions. These included a few concerts with Fluxus compositions organized by the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio (1964) and organized through Józef Patkowski; a journey by Eric Andersen (Copenhagen), who was the first Fluxus artist to travel through several Eastern European countries, performing in private apartments; Fluxus concerts in Lithuania, (organized by Vytautas Landsbergis, George Maciunas` former school pal in 1966), Prague (1966 organized by Milan Knížák, who was appointed „Director Fluxus East“ by Maciunas) and Budapest (in 1969 Tamás St. Auby organized a concert without personal contact to Fluxus artists, using a compilation of Fluxus scores, 1969); and later a Fluxus Festival in Poznań (1977), organized by Jarosław Kozłowski in Galeria Akumulatory.

Fluxus East represents a first stocktaking of the diverse Fluxus activities in the former Eastern Bloc; the exhibition shows parallel developments and artistic practices inspired by Fluxus. Besides "classic" Fluxus objects and scores, the display includes film interviews with Fluxus artists, photographs, films, correspondence, and recordings of music that document the presence of Fluxus in the former Eastern Bloc. As an interactive exhibition, Fluxus East aims to facilitate a profound encounter with ideas, works and texts - some presented as facsimiles to permit intense study. In the course of its tour the exhibition has been developed further and considerably enlarged, including new documents and art works especially from Hungarian, Lithuanian, and Estonian collections.

The exhibition was produced by Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, and funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation. Former exhibition venues: Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius; Bunkier Sztuki, Cracow; Ludwig Museum, Budapest; Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn; and Kunsthallen Nikolaj, Copenhagen.

When Henie Onstad Art Centre was established in 1968, the aim was to be a cross-artistic and dynamic venue for contemporary art and modernism. This is also our goal today. With this cross-over philosophy it falls naturally that the Art Centre now also wants to promote Fluxus.


Henie Onstad Art Centre is the owner of a unique collection of Fluxus art that consists of 700 works. In 2007 Ken Freidman made a significant donation to the Art Centre. This was groundbreaking for the center's continued work with the collection, which in recent years have included a full photograph and registration of the material. This is done with extensive support from the Foundation ForArt.

For the first time, this collection will be on display in the exhibition FLUXUS - HENIE ONSTAD ART CENTRE curated by Caroline Ugelstad. There will also be released a new publication, presenting Fluxus - Henie Onstad Art Centre.
