For the 14th time Kunstmuseum Bonn presents the participants of the Dorothea von Stetten Art Award which is endowed with €10,000. The award addresses young artists, i.e. artists who are less than 36 years of age and have not gained much international recognition yet. Therefore, the Dorothea von Stetten Art Award can be seen as a sponsorship award which aims to support young and unknown artists rather than artists who have already achieved fame.
The sponsorship focuses on two central aspects: On the one hand the artists shall be given the possibility of presenting their works in an internationally operating museum and thus introduce them to a larger public. On the other hand the advertised prize sum shall enable the winner, who is determined by the jury on the day prior to the exhibition opening, to develop their work further for a certain period of time without any financial pressure. The winners of the last years and decades are: Sigrun Jakubaschke (1984), Klaus vom Bruch (1986), Jochen Fischer (1988), Barbara Hée (1990), Berend Strik (1992), Thomas Florschuetz (1994), Gregor Schneider (1996), Tamara Grčić (1998), Johannes Kahrs (2000), Nicole Wermers (2002), Yael Bartana (2004), Yves Mettler (2006) und Kristoffer Akselbo (2008) – all these artists were able, also due to the support of the award, to establish their position on the art market.
This year’s participants, who we wish the same success as their predecessors, were nominated during a two-stage selection progress by the following curators, all involved in the young art scene: Marion Ackermann (Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen), Bart de Baere (Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Antwerpen), Yilmaz Dziwior (Kunsthaus Bregenz), Ulrike Groos (Kunstmuseum Stuttgart), Markus Heinzelmann (Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen), Fabrice Hergott (Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris), Anders Kold (Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Humlebæk), Pia Müller-Tamm (Kunsthalle Karlsruhe), Roland Nachtigäller (MARTA, Herford), Angelika Nollert (Neues Museum Nürnberg), Carina Plath (Sprengel Museum Hannover), Hans-Werner Schmidt (Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig), Angelika Stepken (Villa Romana, Florenz), Roland Wäspe (Kunstmuseum St. Gallen) und René Zechlin (Kunstverein Hannover).
The nominees are: Olivier Foulon (Brussels/Berlin), Melissa Gordon (Berlin), Alicja Kwade (Berlin), Alexandra Leykauf (Berlin) and Tina Schulz (Brussels).
