Speak, Memory

Stroom Den Haag, The Hague

An international group show on remembering, memory and the passage of time. Nine artists explore the erosion of memory and the passage of time through installations, photo and video works, paintings and drawings. Our memories are often elusive, influenced and touched by time and emotions. Point of departure for the exhibition is the work of the artists Leontine Lieffering, Sara Rajaei and Vittorio Roerade who received the Stroom Premium subsidy last year.

Stroom Den Haag presents 'Speak, Memory', an international group show on remembering, memory and the passage of time. Point of departure for the exhibition is the work of the artists Leontine Lieffering, Sara Rajaei and Vittorio Roerade who received the Stroom Premium subsidy last year. This highly profiled grant is given to individual artists on the basis of their current work and their importance in the art world of The Hague. In order to emphasize the importance of this extraordinary prize and the artists thus honored, their work will be viewed from a challenging perspective and placed in the context of the current developments in contemporary art.

The exhibition links the work of the three Premium artists to that of Omer Fast, Sara van der Heide, Anne Holtrop, Cameron Jamie, Andrew Lord and Rachel Whiteread. In ‘Speak, Memory’ the nine artists explore the erosion of memory and the passage of time through installations, photo and video works, paintings and drawings. Our memories are often elusive, influenced and touched by time and emotions.

Leontine Lieffering’s installation shows her fascination with the memory of architecture and the imprint of time on the built environment; Sara Rajaei - winner Prix de Rome, basic award 2009 – presents a video work which explores the transformative power of memory in personal narratives; and Vittorio Roerade returns to the primary structure of memory as it is usually attributed to children.

Video artist Omer Fast (IL) will show a new version of the performance 'Talk Show', a play on the children's game where a sentence is whispered in the ear of the next child, until at the end of the line the phrase significantly differs from the one originally uttered. Fiction, current affairs and highly personal moments and thoughts are brought together in the refined drawings and paintings of Sara van der Heide (KR/NL); memory and transformation form the basis of 'Trail House', a project architect Anne Holtrop first produced in Almere in 2009; in his films Cameron Jamie (USA) explores the interaction between everyday life and myth; Andrew Lord (UK) uses memory as a tangible sense to create images; and Turner Prize winner Rachel Whiteread (UK) uses her work to make tangible what is no longer there: subtle monuments for things past or lost.

Additional program
Every Sunday at 3 pm there will be a guided tour of the exhibition. During 'Speak, Memory' new bilingual Stroom Premium publications on the work of Lieffering, Rajaei and Roerade will be released, as well as the delayed edition on Gamal Ez. In addition there will be a program of studio visits, lectures and film screenings. More information will follow in due time.
