comunicato stampa

Eva Koch is one of the most prominent media artists in Danish contemporary art. Over the years she has garnered great international acclaim and today she is represented in museums all over the world. With her training as a sculptor and media artist from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, 1985-92, Eva Koch spans a wide artistic field. This solo exhibition presents sculpture, photography and video installations.

Sculpture...
Three black iron dots (= 'and so on') are mounted in an absolutely straight line on the wall immediately opposite on entering the exhibition; an object that refers to the continuation of the process, but which also attempts with its 'points' to fix the moment. The three dots point forward and on into the exhibition—an exhibition that looks both back on a long artistic career, and forward to the presentation of new works. Several of Eva Koch's sculptures in the exhibition can be associated with the concept of minimal art—the object is reduced here to simple geometric forms in industrial materials like steel, bronze etc. One of the sculptures stands out in having the sound of roaring waves added.

Photography...
The five photographic diptychs shown deal with the concept of communication. The works have titles like TREE, MOUNTAIN, LAKE etc., where one part presents a purely visual tree, while the other part of the diptych shows a tree by means of sign language; in other words we are in a field of interpretation between the visual and the pure sign. Eva Koch has earlier worked with sign language in the video work APPROACH from 2005, where a group of people, via sign language, quote 14 verses of Dante's Divine Comedy.

Video installation...
The video installation PORTRAITS from BINA, 2010 were originally created for the Culture House in Bina in Azerbaijan. Often, public buildings are decorated with portraits of representative figures from the government or the monarchy, but Eva Koch has instead chosen to portray the inhabitants of Bina, to mark the fact that public space is shared, democratic space, and thus pay tribute to the individual. Alongside the creation of the project the Swedish film producer Stefan Wrenfelt shot a documentary account of the art project AZERBAIJAN ART STATION—The Nordic Experience, 2010, which focuses on the significance of art in public space, and how art can open up avenues of communication among people.

The most recent works as well as site-specific installations by Eva Koch can also be experienced at the exhibition SALAMMBÔ at the New Carlsberg Glyptotek until 6th February 2011. The sculpture PUNKT1, which is being shown at the Martin Asbæk Gallery, will be installed permanently on 2nd April 2011 at Karensminde at the South Harbour, Copenhagen.
