comunicato stampa

Perry Rubenstein Gallery presents its first exhibition with French painter Yves Oppenheim. For his debut New York solo exhibition, he will show paintings on canvas and a wall painting that together trace his practice over the last decade.

The wall painting will cover the entire north wall of the gallery and will anchor the space, while six large paintings hanging on adjacent walls will interact with the color and composition to create a bold, colorful environment. This grouping of paintings follows the recent development of Oppenheim’s abstract formal language where color is the dominant trope through which the artist explores the overlap of drawing and painting.

At times the works are playful; at others they display a just perceptible heaviness that enthralls the viewer and invites us into a sensual environment where time and narrative are suspended. By employing an analytic structure in each work, colors are allowed to wildly flow into and out of each other. There is a joie de vivre about the works that harks to 20th Century painting masters, yet the constitution and color schema are thoroughly contemporary.

Oppenheim’s paintings are constructed in a deceptively free manner. He works with exact precision to delineate color fields layered sometimes with grays, blacks or whites, though his palate is primarily one of vibrant color. The result is staggering, unexpected visual depth featuring twists and turns, including false shadows. Three-dimensional space is simultaneously depicted yet negated which turns the viewer’s line of sight into a conundrum. Rather than working with visual trickery, Oppenheim presents us with another dimension where perpendicular planes exist as one and where traditions of colorful abstraction shine through.

Yves Oppenheim was born in 1948 in Tananarive, Madagascar and currently lives and works in Berlin. Since the 1980’s he has participated in solo and group exhibitions worldwide. His work is in numerous prominent public and private collections, including those of the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; and the Carré d’Art, Nîmes, France.
