Three exhibitions

Columbia College - Center for Book and Paper Arts, Chicago

The group show "Midwinter: Embrace The Darkness" will highlight the work of artists who pull from darkness not only in the literal sense, but also darkness in the sense of what is out of sight, unknown, unknowable or overlooked. As the photographic exhibition "Fear into fire - Reclaiming Black Male Identity Through the Art of Tattooing" centers on topics of representation, identity and personal narrative, each image engages questions of the body. In "Word: Type + Image", 19 poems are lifted from the convention of the white page and shaped into word pictures that crawl up gallery walls.

Midwinter:
Embrace The Darkness

Artists: Dana Carter, Joy Feasley, Roxane Hopper, Irena Knezevic, Isaac Resnikoff, Michael Robinson, Paul Swenbeck, and Craig Yu

curated by: Justin Witte

Midwinter is the day on the calendar when there is the least amount of daylight and the longest period of night. It is on this day when the balance between light and dark swings decidedly in favor of night. Inspired by this time of year the group exhibition Midwinter: Embrace The Darkness will highlight the work of artists who pull from darkness not only in the literal sense, but also darkness in the sense of what is out of sight, unknown, unknowable or overlooked.

With this in mind the work in Midwinter ranges from the investigation of the delicate beauty of ice forming on a windshield in the middle of the night to the haunting landscapes of abandoned Worlds Fair Grounds and the exploration of unsanctioned religious practices.

The work in Midwinter reminds us that we should not only celebrate what is made obvious by daylight, but also value the richness of the unknown and overlooked.

Fear into fire
Reclaiming Black Male Identity Through the Art of Tattooing

Participating artists: Shasta Bady, Akintola Hanif, Jamel Shabazz and Jabari Zuberi

Curated by Nicole Harrison, Columbia College Chicago Alumna, BA in Arts Management, '07

Panel Discussion: Say it Loud: Black Men Speak Without Words, a conversation with the curator, artists and individuals featured in the exhibition. Moderated by Natalie Y. Moore. February 16, 6-7:30pm, Stage 2, 618 S Michigan Ave.

Fear into fire explores the body as a space for archiving memories and telling stories through the art of tattooing. Inspired by young black males of the Hip Hop generation who extensively mark their bodies, this exhibition draws attention to the meanings and connections between the body and the tattoo. The subjects of this show are not only talking back to a society that renders them invisible but resisting their own oppression by taking control of their bodies that have been policed by systems of institutional racism.
As this photographic exhibition centers on topics of representation, identity and personal narrative each image engages questions of the body and the use of the tattoo as a mode for individuality, beauty, community and masculinity. While the intent of the images are to challenge contemporary notions in the mainstream media, the emphasis on the tattoo explores the identity, culture and experience of African American men.

Word: Type + Image

curated by: Department of Exhibition and Performance Spaces

In 'Word: Type + Image', nineteen poems are lifted from the convention of the white page and shaped into word pictures that crawl up gallery walls, hide in corners, wrap themselves around objects and spew out onto the gallery floor. Lines of verse no longer simply evoke images; they become images themselves. 'Word' is a collaboration between Columbia College creative writing poetry students in the Department of English and typography students in the Department of Art and Design. The exhibition also features artwork by students who have responded to the subjects of the poems or who use words as an artform in their own right.
Participating Faculty: Nicole Wilson, Assistant Programs Director of Poetry & Literature, Department of English. Dawn Peccatiello, Department of Art and Design.

Reception: January 27, 5-7pm
