comunicato stampa

Antwerp City Museums, the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art (M HKA) and the Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) have once again joined forces to host this international architectural exhibition. The exhibition highlights the most significant trends in contemporary museum architecture, displaying 29 projects by internationally renowned architects and architectural firms.

Works by Tadao Ando Architect & Associates, Atelier Brückner, ART+ COM, Daniel Libeskind, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano, Mario Botta, Zaha Hadid Architects, Gehry Partners LLP and many more are brought to life through models, sketches, plans and photographs.
Suzanne Greub, director of the Art Centre Basel, was the brainchild behind the idea and concept of the exhibition, which has been on show in no less than 14 cities across four continents since its inception in 2006.

Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts Projects Buildings is a follow-up exhibition of the highly successful exhibition Museums for a New Millennium: Concepts, Projects, Buildings, which travelled to numerous museums throughout Europe, North America, Japan and Korea.

This exhibition is a reflection on the undiminished museum building boom since 2000, in the construction of new museums and in the renovation and expansion of existing institutions.

Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts Projects Buildings presents the most important trends in museum architecture, illustrated by 27 of the world’s leading museum building projects realized since the turn of the century, thereby documenting the increasing international exchange.

Given the degree of architectural momentum in Antwerp, it is no surprise that the city will now also host the exhibition. The future expansion of the oldest museum (KMSKA) and the construction of the latest one, Museum aan de Stroom (MAS), perfectly complement the purposes of the exhibition. These two Antwerp museum projects are consequently granted a special place therein.

The catalogue is published by Prestel Publishing, Munich, and includes four introductory essays on the general situation of museum construction in Europe, the United States, Japan and Australia, written by Dr. Gottfried Knapp, Munich (Europe), Dr. James Russell, New York (USA), Prof. Hiroyuki Suzuki, Tokyo (Japan) and Prof. Leon Paroissien, Canberra (Australia).

Museums in the 21st Century. Concepts, Projects, Buildings is the second exhibition within the new structural partnership between these three major Antwerp museum partners, and will be held in the empty halls of the KMSKA.

An ART CENTRE BASEL exhibition: Suzanne Greub (idea and concept), Felizitas Diering and Patrick Merz (exhibition management), www.artcentrebasel.com.
