Cyril Blazo, Handsome Beggar: his clearly distinguishable vocabulary based on the partial inversion of double-sided reproductions from antiquarian books and journals recodes old signs thereby triggering an interplay of mutually linked interpretations. Artists with Coats of Arms: an exhibition from the collection of 19th century drawings and prints. On view the extensive work of Kamil Lhotak (1912-1990), who was active as a painter, graphic artist, author of films and books.

Cyril Blažo (*1970) is an artist difficult to overlook in the contemporary Slovak art scene. During his studies at the VŠVU in Bratislava (1988-1994) he worked together with Boris Ondreiček and Stano Dančiak jr in the free association BLONDIAK. His clearly distinguishable vocabulary based on the partial inversion of double-sided reproductions from antiquarian books and journals recodes old signs thereby triggering an interplay of mutually linked interpretations.

The names of famous noble families usually crop up in the context of historical events. The exhibition from the collection of 19th century drawings and prints will show them from a different angle. Tutorials in drawing and painting were a common part of aristocratic education and many amateur artists from the nobility proved to be talented pupils of their teachers.

The extensive work of Kamil Lhoták (1912-1990), who was active as a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, author of films and books, is popular with the general public mainly for its subjects and the atmosphere. Flying in the face of the zeitgeist, disregarding the complexities and intellectualism of modernism, the artist dared to rediscover simplicity and describe the world around him. Although not precisely "the world that we live in", it was a world both mundane and universally nostalgic, and as such it struck a chord in its viewers. The exhibition presents the work of a classic of Czech painting and an important member of the Group 42 association in a context
that served as his muse. It will equally concentrate on the works of art and the historical vehicles and other exhibits from the Technical Museum in Brno as well as examples of related period books and illustrations. The principal theme of the exhibition, the strand that it aims to emhasize, is the world of Lhoták's imagery.
The origins of the Moravian Gallery collections go back to the Francis Museum (now the Moravian Provincial Museum) in Brno, established in 1818. However, systematic acquisition only started under Dr. Jaroslav Helfert, the first director of the museum (from 1923) and curator of its picture gallery. His methodical approach enabled a more consistent structure to be brought to the collections and their expansion with topical works representing Czech modernism.
