Harry Cory Wright

Eleven Fine Art, London

Cory Wright methodically uses a large format camera to take only one photograph in each location. The result is photographs charged with a real sense of 'being there' that begin to rekindle our longstanding love affair with the unabashed beauty of British landscape. The artist innately captures visually dense images with immense clarity, precisely educing every detail and nuance of the scene before the camera.

comunicato stampa

Eleven is delighted to present Place in Mind, an exhibition of new photographs by Harry Cory Wright.

Cory Wright adopts an adventurous approach to discovering and re-discovering places in Great Britain through investigating the physicality of what it means to be in a place. He draws on Eugène Atget’s matter-of-fact approach with keen attention to the ambiance of the places he photographs. In a digital age where photographic imagery is widely disseminated and easily captured, Cory Wright methodically uses a large format camera to take only one photograph in each location. The result is photographs charged with a real sense of 'being there' that begin to rekindle our longstanding love affair with the unabashed beauty of British landscape.

Cory Wright innately captures visually dense images with immense clarity, precisely educing every detail and nuance of the scene before the camera. Taking iconic sites and wider notions of place that are recognizable and familiar such as the London skyline, visiting Stonehenge, being inside the Concorde cockpit, and strolling along coastal cliffs, the artist depicts a culmination of experiences which belong to all of us. In this series he explores a shared perception of what landscapes mean to us personally, locally, and collectively.

Following on from the success of his 2006 series Journey Through the British Isles where he travelled extensively across Britain documenting and celebrating the splendour of the countryside, Cory Wright uses his personal experiences of discovering places and now outwardly explores our collective views of the landscape in Place in Mind.

Cory Wright has also worked in collaborations with writers including David Almond, Adam Nicolson, Ruth Padel, Lionel Shriver and Geoff Dyer illuminating their ‘places in mind.’ He creates relationships with each individual uncovering their own personal narratives about the places we share.

Cory Wright uses a 10 x 8 inch wooden Gandolfi plate camera to produce negatives of astonishing clarity and detail. His printer in London, Jean Lippett, works closely with him to create the 20 x16 inch prints which start to reveal the information from the negative. Grieger, in Germany, then enlarge the photographs and it is at this point that the incredible level of detail really starts to appear. The c prints are available in two sizes – 58 x 71 in / 148 x 180 cm (edition of 3) and 32 ½ x 39 in / 83 x 100 cm (edition of 7)

Harry Cory Wright was born in 1963 and lives and works in Norfolk.
