sharon kivland will exhibit recent works that draw on her archive of magazines, prints, publicity leaflets or objects, and advertising from different eras. kivland employs the movement and displacement of ideas, words, images, and objects. connections are woven in series, using strategies of appearances, disguise, impersonation, vulgar copying, subtle dialogues, intimate suggestion, and a lack of historical fixity. working with reproductions that are in their turn reproduced and reworked, kivland’s approach is that of the amateur and collector, doing her very best with diligence and dedication. there is affection as much as irony in the works, often displayed in the titles which reveal appropriation and the claiming of possession. kivland has shown widely in europe and north america. her work is represented in the united kingdom by domobaal, london, and in germany by galerie bugdahn & kaimer, düsseldorf. kivland has invited french artist benjamin swaim as her guest.
guest artist:
benjamin swaim will exhibit works from a series of overpainted images. printed photographs extracted from various books are painted over with indian ink. these ‘nocturnal’ images are like fragments of memories; it is uncertain if they are real memories or souvenirs, something about which one may have been told or has dreamt. the series are not frightening but they possess a feeling of disquieting strangeness, holding the somewhat heady and unsure memory of a death that may precede birth. swaim has exhibited widely in france, including recent projects at the palais de tokyo and la maison rouge, paris. his work is represented in france by galerie jean brolly
