On the occasion of the publication of Artur Zsmijewski's interview book 'Trembling Bodies' the daadgalerie shows the film works and documentations of the performance, photography, and film art in Poland from the 1990s till the present. The protagonists of this book took part in a confrontation which enfolded across the most various parts of life that changed the political reality and defined a political language in which ideas and concepts took on radically new meanings.
On the occasion of the publication of Artur śmijewski’s interview book DrŜące ciała (Trembling Bodies /
Book cover: Trembling Bodies
Körper in Aufruhr, in German) and parallel to the Berlin international film festival, the daadgalerie will be
showing the film works and documentations of the performance, photography, and film art in Poland from the
1990s till the present.
The conversations Zśmijewski initiated between 1993 and the present, with artists associated with the Polish
movement “Critical Art” – which radicalized and modernized the language of art as well as its mediums and
ways of distribution – serve as a document of historical change in Poland after 1989. śmijewski’s
conversation partners share the experiences of a generation as well as special methods of working: the
readiness to sacrifice themselves, freedom of choice, and an unwillingness to compromise. The protagonists
of this book took part in a confrontation which enfolded across the most various parts of life that changed the
political reality and defined a political language in which ideas and concepts took on radically new meanings.
A social movement was created that looked like art because it was founded by artists. In fact, it was an
intellectual and political movement that suggested another model of social change.
The exhibition gathers together a selection of films and performance documentation that have been up until
now only rarely seen in Germany, and that are representative of the “Critical Art” movement and its
successors.
