comunicato stampa

Galería Marta Cervera has the pleasure to announce the solo exhibition of artist Francesco Jodice (Napels, 1967).

The exhibition comprises three documentary films: Dubai, Aral and Sao Paulo, accompanied by six photographs (two per city) closely connected with the videos. Finally, texts which Francesco Jodice and his collaborators have used as instruments of study and preparation when writing the script have been copied by hand on the walls by girls and boys aged between 8 and 11.
The expository speech deals with the problematic relationship between the environment, architecture and the human being, apart from with the relationships that the latter establishes in its social organization. A montage with photographs, videos and texts that invites us to reflect on the change in the landscape of some areas of our planet caused by men’s interference.

Citytellers is an investigation project by Francesco Jodice that observes the phenomena in the human life and the socio-politic transformations in cities and communities. It investigates, in many levels and with an interdisciplinary attitude (architecture, anthropology and sociology), the landscape and its relationship with the human being. Citytellers is a work started in 2006 and it presents a series of documentary films investigating the necessities and capacities of communities to organize themselves, analyzing the inter-relationship between the meaning of contemporary documents and the strategies of fictional communication.

The first one of these series of films, Sao Paulo_Citytellers, has been exhibited, among others, in the rooms of Sao Paulo’s Biennale, in London’s TATE and the Art Center Dos de Mayo in Madrid. The film deals with the phenomenon of self-management, typical of human communities where institutions are lacking.

Aral_Citytellers is a work about the different aspects of life around what was before Aral’s interior sea. Its surface has diminished drastically since the 60’s, when the course of the rivers of Amu Daria and Syr Darya was altered to irrigate the crops in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The result of this engineering mistake is an area practically deserted, an ecological disaster and yard of old fishing boats, a population deprived of sustenance but who has not, however, been abandoned by its community, which today constitutes a “human archeology”.

Dubay_Citytellers deals with the contradictions (and the hypocrisy) of a famous case of contemporary neo-urbanism, a metropolis built as a “cathedral of the desert”, pushed by the unsustainable economic development that caused the recent financial crash.
These three points of view towards remote geopolitical realities put us in contact with the interstices of the social landscape’s continuous mutations and allow us to understand better the contemporary reality around us.

Francesco Jodice is a founder member of Multiplicity. In 2008 the United Nations asked him to make a short film for the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He participated in Documenta Kassel, Venice’s Biennale, Sao Paulo’s Biennale, Liverpool’s Biennale and ICP Trienal of Photography and Video in New York. His works have been exhibited, among others, in London’s TATE Modern, Madrid’s Mncars, Turin’s Castello di Rivoli, Paris’ Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Bard College in New York, Bologna’s MAMBO and Napels’ MADRE.
