Made Up: What is human, is an art exhibition that will strive to look at the human persona by taking dressing up past self-expression and into the realm of the psychological. Participating artists, using various mediums (painting, drawing, installation, and performance), will examine the nature of appearances, fantasy and stereotypes - the forces that help determine culturally accepted behaviour and at the same time cast differing behaviour to the wayside. The artworks will address the personae we shun and disguise in the tireless and often unsatisfying struggle to blend in.

The artists will adopt new personae that tackle such subjects as celebrity, cultural attitudes, animal behavior, and the super-natural. Among the art works are: Kim Connerton's performance as singer Nico from the Village Underground (shown on two "interacting" videos), a gaze into how fame and femininity is communicated to the public; Susan Ingraham shows her sultry performance as "Iguana" (displayed on video and in installation), a transformation which confronts primal behavior; and Linda Dennis's luscious oil painting from her "Beautiful World" series of a fantastical self portrait is on view, which explores romanticized behavior. The various artists represent the range of identities that come and go like the tide.

The artists are Top Changtrakul (Lance Fung Gallery), Kim Connerton (Rome Arts), Linda Dennis (456 Gallery), Betsy Heistand (Williamsburg Art and Historical Center), Jill Henderson (PS1 Contemporary Art Center), Susan Ingraham (New York Film and Video Project), and Omar Rodriguez (Globe Institute of Technology). Alison Levy (The Brewster Project) is the show's curator.
