comunicato stampa

TRANS> area is pleased to present Salto del Agua, a new collaborative work by Christian Manzutto and Anton Vidokle, on view from November 1 through November 23, 2002.

Salto Del Agua is a 10-minute film featuring the facade of a ubiquitous, yet unremarkable building in Mexico City. Recorded on Super 8 film with an audio accompaniment, the work is a study of the iconic presence and resonance of urban architecture. Salto Del Agua is a public transportation station that would otherwise go unnoticed in the urban sprawl of Mexico City. Built in the late-sixties in the center of Mexico City's metropolis, the building represents a moment in the city's history, shortly following 1968 Olympics, when idealistic hopes of 'progress' infused civic design.

A futuristic glass and modular concrete facade of the building paradoxically reflects the prosaic movement from the streets. The occasional car and passerby seen down below from the 'lens' of the building causes a strange dissolution of two-dimensional space. The sound, consisting of several pure electronic frequencies that weave pulsations and waves that shift slightly throughout the film, creates a sonic grid that parallels the architectural grid of the image.

Christian Manzutto is a sound engineer who has worked extensively with music, film and sound projects in Mexico and Europe. Most recently he worked on the sound track for a new documentary on Gabriel Orozco.

Anton Vidokle is a visual artist based in New York. His work has been included in exhibitions at Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Museo Carrillo Gil, Mexico DF., and PS1/MoMA.

TRANS> area, a new not-for-profit exhibitions space in Chelsea, is an extension of the discourse that has been developed by TRANS> arts.cultures.media in print.
