VOLTA NY returns for its fourth consecutive year, filling its borders
with an array of cutting-edge artists from 83 galleries, representing
23 countries and 45 cities, in its central midtown Manhattan location
opposite the iconic Empire State Building.
Forty-five European dealers will be in attendance, with strong
showings from Germany (16 galleries across seven cities) and five
galleries from Denmark, providing a broad vista onto particularly
intriguing emerging art scenes. The United States' 24 attendees are
split between 12 New Yorkers and 12 artists from cities spanning the
East and West Coasts, such as Boston, New Orleans, and Los Angeles,
plus the exhibiting the spectrum extends throughout Russia and Eastern
Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.
Continuing the original mandate as showcase for relevant contemporary
positions—regardless of the artist or gallery's age—VOLTA NY will
feature exclusively solo projects of notable and emerging
international artists. VOLTA NY complements the exciting program
presented by its sister fair The Armory Show with shared VIP access
and the Open Forum Talks Program, plus direct shuttle between both
fairs.
At VOLTA NY the talks focus on conversations, including: art
historian and curator Courtney Martin with Deborah Grant, exhibiting
work from her brand new series The Crowning of King William, based on
the life and work of William H. Johnson; Erin Sickler, the director of
601Art Space and Kate Kraczon, assistant curator at the ICA,
Pennsylvania, with Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, discussing their concepts
of remote viewing and art-speak as relates to their daily performance
at VOLTA NY; and critic and curator Ed Halter with underground
filmmaker George Kuchar, influential on artist from John Waters to
Andy Warhol and whose films are screening as part of the collaborative
program curated by Artprojx Cinema at Chelsea's SVA Theatre, featuring
an international cast of over 80 artists' works and programming day
and night throughout the fair's duration.
More video can be viewed as part of the PROJECTiON
program—presented by Culture Shock Marketing (CSM) and
Vimeo—screening in the 7W elevators, the shuttle buses, and on the
fair floor. This is a curated selection of bleeding-edge contemporary
moving-image digital artworks, selected from Vimeo.com, from computer
animation and effects to Super-8 film and experimentation, and will
feature works by Paddy Jolley, Glenn Marshall, Hugh McGrory, Scott
Pagano, and J.G. Zimmerman.
Echoing the special section Armory Focus: Latin America, five
galleries are showing from the region plus several other attendees
specifically bringing artists from countries including Argentina,
Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. This includes a
performance by Mauricio Miranda (Costa Rica), who will participate in
the 2012 Havana Biennial; a spatial intervention by C.L. Salvaro
(Brazil), who exhibited at the 63rd Salão Paranaense (2009); and
paintings by Amadeo Azar (Argentina), an up-and-comer in the lively
Buenos Aires arts scene selected for notable local prizes, including
the Premio Fundación Andreani 2009/10.
This year we are excited to partner with two new companies that will
bring more information about our program right to your fingertips.
Artlog will present the official online catalogue for VOLTA NY 2011,
while Collectrium, in collaboration with Artlog, will provide the
VOLTA iPhone app including image-recognition technology.
