Siukonen’s New York debut showcases small-scale sculptures and drawings from recent years. The title of his show, A Man Who Carries Implements, draws its inspiration from Jonathan Swift’s classic 18th-Century satire Gulliver’s Travels.
A Man Who Carries Implements
>From November 14 through December 21, 2002, M.Y. Art Prospects is pleased to
present a solo exhibition entitled A Man Who Carries Implements by Jyrki
Siukonen. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, November
14, 6-8pm.
Siukonen’s New York debut showcases small-scale sculptures and drawings from
recent years. The title of his show, A Man Who Carries Implements, draws its
inspiration from Jonathan Swift’s classic 18th-Century satire Gulliver’s
Travels. According to Swift, objects could better serve as means of
communication than words. So the things one carried might serve as “a universal
language that could be understood in all civilized nations, whose goods and
utensils are generally of the same kind or nearly resembling …†This idea of
“portable language†fascinates Siukonen both visually and methodologically. Many
of Siukonen’s shows have exhibited only the amount of artworks that he can
personally carry.
Jyrki Siukonen (b. 1959) is a sculptor and installation artist living and
working in Finland. He has exhibited widely in Europe since 1982. He was a Henry
Moore Foundation Gregory Fellow at the University of Leeds in the UK from 1994
to’96, editor-in-chief for the art magazine Taide (Helsinki) 1996–97, and
received a doctorate in Fine Art in 2001. His work has been exhibited and
collected by leading Finnish art museums including the Finnish National
Gallery.’ “
There will be a limited-edition exhibition catalogue numbered and signed by the
artist. This exhibition is supported in part by FRAME- the Finnish Fund for Art
Exchange, Greta and William Lehtinen Foundation, and the Arts Council of
Finland.
