comunicato stampa

The work of Agency constitutes a growing list of case studies that represent ideas and concerns related to art practices: specifically intellectual property and authorship. For the exhibition Assembly (Showroom), Agency invites visitors to delve into each case or ‘Thing’, to examine documents, objects, paraphernalia and audiovisual media. Cases include: a controversy relating to the authorship of Ernest Hemingway’s biography, litigation against the Renoir estate and issues around legendary 80s band Spandau Ballet.

Each ‘Thing’ creates a platform to encourage questions relating to culture and nature; expressions and ideas; subjects and objects; originality and banality; individuals and collectives. In allowing access to these archives, the exhibition will consider if or how artist collectives can be art practices, whether reciprocal relationships between artists and their assistants bring about joint authorship and whether being the subject of an artwork makes you a co-creator.

Agency has invited five speakers to discuss the consequences of intellectual property in relation to Assembly (Showroom) at an event on the afternoon of 28 May 2011.

Agency is a Brussels-based organisation that was founded in 1992 by artist Kobe Matthys.

The Showroom enables new work by artists who have not had significant exposure in London before. The Showroom is focused on collaborative, discursive and process-driven approaches to production, be that artwork, exhibitions, discussions, publications, knowledge and relationships.

The Showroom is supported by Arts Council England and members of the gallery’s Supporters Scheme. Assembly (Showroom) is supported by the Henry Moore Foundation, the Flemish Government Agency for Arts and Heritage and is part of CIRCULAR FACTS, funded by the European Commission.
