Videonale 13

Kunstmuseum Bonn, Bonn

As a platform for new trends and tendencies in video art, for 25 years the Videonale has featured the works of new developing positions of contemporary video art as well as internationally established artists. Sixweek exhibition presents about 40 video works, selected by an international jury. The exhibition of the Videonale 13 goes along with an intensive festival program, which includes panel discussions, workshops as well as performances, night video sessions and an educational program.

Round-eyed Manga characters which have become human, clad in bright colours, reading, playing table tennis, eating – despite constant mishaps the actors keep smiling from one artificial comic-strip pose to the next. In a humorous fashion the video by Taiwanese Chi-Yu Liao thematises the breakdown of relationships and communication which has come to a standstill. It is one of the 46 works which will be shown at the Bonn Kunstmuseum between 15 April and 29 May 2011 as part of Videonale 13. The Videonale was founded in 1984 and is one of the oldest video art festivals in the world.

The record number of submissions of the previous Videonale was once again exceeded: The jury of the 13th edition had to sift through 1774 works from 76 countries. For the first time extended admissions requirements applied: Multichannel works were admitted to the competition. The works chosen reflect, above all, two major currents: The immersion in a rather more personal level and the examination of societal and social structures.

Artists such as Katarzyna Kozyra, Chi-Yu Liao and Ran Huang focus on private matters: Personal points of view, experiences and interpersonal relationships are emphasised by means of a deliberately appealing visual language and aesthetics. Facing limitless possibilities and overly complex threats, the artists chose to revert back to their interior worlds, to straighforwardness.

On the other hand there are works by Nurit Sharett, Otholith Group, Nicholas Provost and Ascan Breuer which explore a larger cosmos and discusses the political, urban and social space or armed conflicts.

“The submissions show us that internationally we are an important platform for young media art. Despite the fact that this year’s Videonale features more well-known names than previous years, we will continue to focus on discovering and fostering young artists”, says, Georg Elben, curator of Videonale.

The jury was made up of Kathrin Becker (Berlin), Georg Elben (Cologne), Charlotte Ginsborg (London), Marc Glöde (Berlin), Dieter Kiessling (Düsseldorf), Tasja Langenbach (Cologne), Karol Piekarski (Katowice) and Jun-Jieh Wang (Taipei).

“Media art is the youngest genre within the visual arts. The use of modern media and techniques opens up completely new possibilities of expression”, claims Dr. Ulrich Schröder, CEO of KfW Bankengruppe. “The way we see it innovation is the key to a society’s modernisation – this is why KfW supports Videonale as its main sponsor.”

Videonale e.V. – founded in Bonn in 1984 – organises one of the world’s oldest festivals of video art. The Videonale’s history goes back 25 years and started at the Bonn Kunstverein. Since then the festival has grown steadily and, in this field, has turned into a significant institution for current video art. Since 2004 Videonale has been using the premises of the Bonn Kunstmuseum and meaningfully complements the so-called video pioneers from the bestowal by Ingrid Oppenheim who, in the late 1970s, as an art collector and patron of the arts, laid the ideational foundations of today’s Videonale. Videonale has “…always had the advantage, as a quasi film festival, of being able to portray its current filmic state of development. Herein lies its function as an aesthetic indicator.” (K.WEST)

In the spring of 2011 Videonale Bonn runs the festival combined with an international competition for the 13th time. During the six weeks of its duration international positions of contemporary video art will be presented in an exhibition architecture designed specially for this purpose. The architecture thematises how video art can be presented in a classic museal context which was exclusively conceived for painting and sculpture. The exhibition design aims at preserving open spaces, thus avoiding the black box atmosphere often rejected by visitors.
