Roee Rosen (born 1963, lives and works in Tel Aviv) is a painter, writer,
filmmaker and theoretician of art. He's considered to be one of the most
important artists working today in Israel. Rosen heads the advances visual
arts program at HaMidrasha College of Art and teached at the Bezalel art
academy. Breakthrough in his carrier came with Live and Die as Eva Braun,
presented at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in 1997. Rosen created a visual
/ literary screenplay, allowing the viewer virtually play the title role of
Eva Braun, a historical character, Adolf Hitler's mistress. Viewer could see
through her eyes the world in a Berlin bunker during the last days of World
War II - with all the perverse, erotic, political and ethical consequences
of such game. In Live and Die as Eva Braun Rosen has taken up the Holocaust
subject, essential for Israeli consciousness, from an unfeasible perspective
almost impossible to accept. He also announced his artistic strategy, based
on the interweaving of visual and literary creations, organized into
complex, powerful narratives.
This comprehensive approach was continued in Justine Frank and The
Confessions of Roee Rosen, two projects that next to Eva Braun are among the
most important achievements of the artist. In both works are present the
key elements of Rosen's art: study of the intellectual potential of
transgression and of the iconoclastic gesture, manipulation of the concept
of identity, a question about the possibility of creating fictional people,
blurring the boundary between the viewer's consciousness, author, and
presented characters, acts of turning into the Other, who becomes the medium
of para-theatrical performance, but also a victim of symbolic Possession.
