The exhibition will be presented in two parts: first, an in-gallery project will gather works by Ursula Biemann, Christian Philipp Muller and Andreas Rutkauskas. The second part of the project will unfold during the summer of 2012 in the town of Stanstead.

comunicato stampa

The contextual exhibition Stanstead Project, or How to Cross the Border, articulates itself around the theme of the border, seen as an architectural artefact that becomes part of a landscape that has an impact on citizens’ mobility all across the world. In Stanstead, a small border town located in the Eastern Townships, recently reinforced security measures have disrupted the everyday life of local people.

The exhibition will be presented in two parts : first, an in-gallery project will gather works by Ursula Biemann (Zurich, Switzerland), Christian Philipp Müller (Swiss, lives and works in New York and Berlin), and Andreas Rutkauskas (Montreal, Quebec). The in-gallery exhibition is a site to reflect and exchange upon issues related to border politics around the world. Featured are: maps, photographs and video produced by Andreas Rutkauskas on the site of Stanstead; Christian Philipp Müller’s Green Border, presented in 1993 at the Venice Biennale for the Austrian Pavilion as well as the recent video Burning Love; and the single-channel videos Performing the Border and Europlex by Ursula Biemann.

The second part of the project will unfold during the summer of 2012 in the town of Stanstead and feature interventions and works by Raphaëlle de Groot (Montreal, Quebec), Althea Thauberger (Vancouver, British-Columbia) and Christian Philipp Müller. Site-specific installations will forge links between the town's history and recent events. The intention is to provide the context for Stanstead citizens to assess and make explicit the impact of repressive policies.

Please join us for a panel discussion at 6:30 pm on the evening of the opening reception May 11 with Geneviève Chevalier, Andreas Rutkaukas and Tamara Vukov. Opening reception co-presented with the Crossing Borders Research Group (Bishop’s University)
