Wien (OTS). The gallery–curator project curated by_vienna opens up new opportunities of cooperation between galleries and curators. The third edition of curated by_vienna entitled EAST by SOUTH WEST describes a geographical conundrum, which is to be solved by using a contemporary art compass. Vienna’s competency regarding Central and Eastern Europe is being put to the test against the background of globalized mechanisms of contemporary art. 21 internationally renowned curators were invited to develop special exhibitions in cooperation with 21 leading Viennese galleries.

“What makes curated by_ so special is the fact that it allow to obtain new findings on the chosen topic based on a wide range of top-quality exhibitions. “EAST by SOUTH WEST” is not meant as a review of Vienna’s CEE competency of the past decades from a historical point of view. The idea is rather to demonstrate by means of exemplary exhibitions how Vienna–as a worldwide networked gallery location–deals with such an important and complex question today. Thus this year again we expect a significant stimulus, which can only be triggered by projects as innovative as curated by_,” explains Christoph Thun- Hohenstein, Managing Director of departure, the creative agency of the City of Vienna.

The participating curators span three generations and present exhibitions in which 102 artists have participated. The exhibitions delve into the formations of art made in the territories being examined and consider the work of some of the most influential artists of the periods of radical experimentation and protest associated with the various anticommunist undergrounds. In addition assaying new artists, current trends, and new conceptual and critical developments are presented as well as their impact upon the
international contemporary art scene.

Experienced as a whole, curated by_vienna 2011: EAST by SOUTH WEST, will enable audiences to chart intersections, connections, and diversions across the exhibitions and the sociopolitical geography they encompass – a space that features Vienna. A bilingual exhibition catalog (German/English) accompanying curated by_vienna 2011 is published by Verlag für moderne Kunst Nürnberg supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture. With a foreword by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein and texts by Sabine B. Vogel and Simon Rees. The catalog is edited by the participating galleries.

The project is accompanied by a bilingual (German/English) catalogue published by Verlag fuer moderne Kunst Nuremburg, containing essays by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Sabine B. Vogel, and Simon Rees as well as curatorial statements about each of the exhibitions, information about the participating artists and curators, and full-colour reproductions.

A suite of three panel discussions involving 10 of the participating artists and curators, plus 5 invited international guests will be held at the Messe Wien on Saturday 14 May, 1–6.30 pm. Exploring three major themes connecting the 21 exhibitions—the status of feminism in art from the region, on-going colonial legacies, and periphery complexes—the panels provide an excellent opportunity to find out more about the socio-political and conceptual contexts underpinning the project.

The opening days of curated by_vienna 2011 coincide with VIENNAFAIR (May 12–15, 2011) and Fruits, Flowers, and Clouds (May 12–14, 2011).
