Crap, crap, crap! In an ironic take on the Danish style of cartoons popular in the 70's, but now largely defunct due to their blatant sexism and racism, Nyholm creates a stage-set that makes the gallery space into a caricature of itself.
Come and join us to celebrate the opening of a new series of projects
hosted by Peter Bergman, APPENDIX.
Samuel Nyholm will transform part of the gallery into the setting of
one of his own cartoons. In an ironic take on the Danish style of
cartoons popular in the 70’s, but now largely defunct due to their
blatant sexism and racism, Nyholm creates a stage-set that makes the
gallery space into a caricature of itself.
In Nyholm’s cartoon-world, the artist is a lone, pitiful figure
desperate for recognition from a crude and one-dimensional audience.
We are invited to “mingle” with the cartoons; to punch the artist, who
is made out of a punching-ball, and move the dismissive cartoon-
audience around, and in this way act out or re-enact the often
willfully repressed aspects of exhibiting and seeing art, within the
gallery space itself.
Samuel Nyholm (sany.dk) is an artist and designer based in Stockholm.
He is co-founder of the graphic design bureau Reala, creator of
Heyscore.com, and has published several artists books. Previous
exhibitions include ‘Sany Nyholm presents Stavros’ at Kunsthalle St.
Gallen in 2010, and in 2008 the film project 'Scenografi' in Berlin,
in collaboration with Annika Larsson.
The publication ‘Boken om 0’, a collaboration between Samuel Nyholm,
Ksenia Pedan and Aron Heinemann, will be for sale during the opening
night.
