54th Biennale di Venezia
Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, committed to commissioning and the production of unconventional contemporary art projects, is contributing to the new compelling project by Gelitin on the occasion of the 54th Biennale di Venezia “ILLUMInations”, curated by Bice Curiger.
During the opening days of rive Gelitin will maintain a traditional wood-fired glass-melting furnace. They will melt broken glass, which will constantly flow out of the furnace and drop to the floor to form a growing glass puddle sculpture. An enormous amount of wood and energy and labor and heat and broken glass and sweat and blisters are needed to be transformed into a sculpture.
The illuminated nation of Gelatin presents their hottest sculpture ever. Performers from all over the world join Gelatin to chop wood, flirt, play guitar, feed the furnace 24/7 and keep the fire burning. A wood fired furnace at the Giardino delle Vergini in the Arsenale melts shards into a puddle of hot liquid glass. A very big lava puddle of hot liquid glass. Logs, fumes, smoke, cracks, heat, energy. (Gelitin)
Special guests, the NY-based Punk-band Japanther, which T-B A21 has recently commissioned to produce a new piece on the occasion of their exhibition “Figura cuncta videntis (the all-seeying eye) / Homage to Christoph Schlingensief” will contribute more than just sounds and music!
Japanther about the project: “In response to Gelatin's furnace piece we will record and work with sounds captured underwater in the canals of Venice. Using a hydrophone to hear the man-made sounds of the city and introducing water into a very element based performance. Utilizing the cities unique surroundings as an audio glue for psychedelic Rock and Roll jams. Not unlike the analog tapes Japanther currently uses, the hydrophone provides an all encompassing backdrop of live improvisational noise to the performance. Inducing trance and allowing the viewer a total wash by wall of sound.”
