We Are All Made of Stars
Laurel Nakadate is an artist who constructs worlds of death, dance, fantasy, life, love, lust, romance, power and submission. Acutely aware of the actual art experience for the audience, her stage and editing direction looks to build personal relationships with her video participants - all hermetic males.
Laurel says "Did you ever notice one of those men? You know the ones, single men, in rooms, childless and alone. Men who spend afternoons at the public library, reading crime novels, watching families. Their apartments resembling dorm rooms with piles of paper and magazines spread out across the surface, using coffee cups as ashtrays and eating off of the same two dishes everyday.
Presented for the first time, an exhibition of five multiple channel videos, which entertainingly deconstruct primordial facets of human behavior, particularly male-female, father-daughter relationships. Nakadates inspirations range from such social manifestations as Britney Spears, Mtv, the Lolita complex and of course fine art.
