In partnership with The New Yorker, Steven Kasher Gallery is honored to present New Yorker Fiction/Real Photography, a selection of over 30 important photographs selected by Elisabeth Biondi and Steven Kasher from the artwork accompanying Fiction stories published in The New Yorker from 1998 to 2011. This exhibition is a tribute to the distinguished New Yorker Visuals Editor Elisabeth Biondi and to the extraordinary photography she has brought to the The New Yorker for fifteen years.
New Yorker Fiction/Real Photography features photographs by such illustrious figures as Adam Fuss, Tierney Gearon, Peter Hujar, Justine Kurland, Loretta Lux, Justine Kurland, Marilyn Minter, Martin Parr, Cindy Sherman, Juergen Teller, Paolo Ventura and many more.
In addition, excerpts from Fiction stories whose artwork are featured in the show will be included in the exhibition. This roster of important authors includes: Julian Barnes, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Don DeLillo, Nadine Gordimer, Steven Millhauser, Alice Munro, Joyce Carol Oates and more.
For over 85 years The New Yorker has presented the world’s greatest short story writers. But only under Ms. Biondi’s visual editorship have these been accompanied by artwork, most often photographic. The counterposition of fiction with the facticity of photography makes a stimulating friction. The fictions are moored in visual facts. The pictures absorb narrative readings.
The process of selecting the Fiction photographs is rigorous. It starts with searching the encyclopedic brains of Biondi and her staff, and their vast library of photo books. Most weeks a query e-mail goes out to a couple of hundred of colleagues: photographers, editors, scholars, gallerists and curators. Images from the to-be-published story are evoked in haiku-like lines. Man waiting alone at bar on Halloween, everyone in costume except him. A shiny green John Deere diesel tractor, tires as tall as a man. The question is: do you have any pictures like that? You will find answers in this exhibition.
