Eva Frapiccini

Around the Corner Project Space, Rotterdam

Thank you for coming! is a project about Dutch identity as seen through the eyes of Eva Frapiccini, the artist selected as the first guest of the new residency run by Stichting Nac, “Around the Corner”. The project is the result of 5-months of residency in Rotterdam and her encounter with its culture. Thank you for coming! originates from the artist’s interest in the development of Dutch iconography and the establishment of its identity through the centuries.

Eva Frapiccini, who works with photography as well as with video, performance and video- installation in public and private spaces, always involves a consistent research component in her artistic practice.

For the residency at Stichting Nac, the artist decided to develop a project in two phases: both of them result from a long researching process and concern the contemporary Dutch identity. The starting point and source for the first part of the work was the study on paintings from the 17th century, which portrait Dutch society in various aspects. These images represent for the artist the ideas of tolerance and multiculturalism and the complex relationship between the “new” Dutch and the traditional society. She chose those paintings that could be a methaphor of the sense of community, and used them to design 5 posters as artworks, but also invitations for the second part of the project.

The posters will be spread through the whole city of Rotterdam through an advertising campaign, with the aim of stimulating curiosity as well as questioning the passers-by.

The second phase of the project is a performance, which will take place at the project space “Around the Corner” on June 26th. To realise the performance, which is the result of a workshop of one month, the artist worked together with Veronica Olivotto Skiba and a group of breakdancers. The performance explores the relationship between oral and body language in culture. The dancers worked around the degrees of tension, an excercise developed in experimental theatre to identify a character’s traits from physical tension.

During the performance a slideshow will be projected in the project space Around the Corner with images from the realisation of the performance and the research and preparation of the posters.

The performance is developed integrating breakdance and degrees of tension, through the use of a soundtrack which consists of a music composed especially for the project together with some excerpts from the so-called “Inburgering test”, an exam which judges the level of integration of foreigners in the Netherlands. The performative act represents the progressive self-consciousness and freedom of the young generations growing within the frame of Dutch culture.
