Thomas Houseago - Michael Sailstorfer

Centre international d'art et du paysage, Ile de Vassiviere

On Vassiviere Island, Thomas Houseago presents a series of monumental and anthropomorphic figures both in the interior spaces and in the wood of sculptures. Seized by the landscape of Vassiviere and with all his generosity, the artist displays his work on the entire territory, including a bronze lantern installed in the middle of the lake on the snakes' island. At The Cafe' de l'ile, situated at the extremity of Aldo Rossi's building, Michael Sailstorfer recycles four caravans to rebuild a new and fully operational house. This construction, recalling De Stael's paintings, impose itself in the Cafe' de l'ile as an opened structure that welcomes visitors to taste german dishes.

Thomas Houseago. What Went Down
Curated by Chiara Parisi

From July 3rd 2011, the Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière will host Thomas Houseago’s first monographic exhibition in France. Born in Leeds in 1972, Thomas Houseago lives and works in Los Angeles and is well established in the international art world by his exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, at the S.M.A.K in Gent and more recently at the Biennale of the Whitney Museum and at the Punta della dogana as well as at the Palazzo Grassi in Venizia.

On Vassivière Island, Thomas Houseago presents a series of monumental and anthropomorphic figures both in the interior spaces and in the wood of sculptures. Seized by the landscape of Vassivière and with all his generosity, the artist displays his work on the entire territory, including a bronze lantern installed in the middle of the lake on the snakes’ island.

Thomas Houseago’s sculptures are made from members made of plates of plaster scribbled with graphite and of heads in traditional materials like wood or bronze. His figures, walking or crawling assume poses that evoke a hypothetical transition between man and animal. Although imposing, monstrous and powerful looking, they also appear fragmented and vulnerable.

Thanks to their poses and their expressivity, the sculptures engage the visitor in a direct and active dialogue. The proximity of the artworks allows the public to experience their textures and the manner of their making. By making the creation process accessible and palpable, the artist provides an immediate way to connect to the work and thus makes “the magic of sculpture” happen.

Michael Sailstorfer. Heimatlied

The Café de l'île, situated at the extremity of Aldo Rossi’s building and giving an unique and amazing view on the lake, becomes for every summer a place of transmission and exchanges with invitation to artists and architects to rethink this space.

After Michelangelo Pistoletto with the Love Difference Pastry shop in 2009 and Kengo Kuma with the tea pavilion Fu-an in 2010, Michael Sailstorfer, young german artist, will invest this space of meeting by presenting Heimatlied from 3 july to 23 october 2011 .

With this work, Michael Sailstorfer recycles four caravans to rebuild a new and fully operational house. This construction, recalling De Stael’s paintings, impose itself in the Café de l’île as an opened structure that welcomes visitors to taste german dishes.
