Preview exhibition. In early 2011 Ben Stiller joined together with gallerist and art dealer David Zwirner to organize this high-profile art auction to be held at Christie's in New York. Artists for Haiti joins in the much needed humanitarian effort to raise significant funds for children's education and health programs.
On January 12, 2010, Haiti — the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere — was struck by a catastrophic earthquake that reportedly took nearly 230,000 lives, injured over 300,000 people, and left over a million homeless and displaced. Even now, well over a year and a half later, widespread devastation remains.
In early 2011, actor, director, and philanthropist Ben Stiller joined together with gallerist and art dealer David Zwirner to organize Artists for Haiti, a major, high-profile art auction to be held at Christie’s in New York on September 22, 2011. Artists for Haiti, a nonprofit organization, joins in the much needed humanitarian effort to raise significant funds for children’s education and health programs. 100% of this charity auction sale will go to support nonprofits and NGOs that are already performing extraordinary work on the ground in Haiti, including: Architecture for Humanity, Artists for Peace and Justice, Ciné Institute, Grameen Creative Lab, J/P HRO, Partners In Health, and The Stiller Foundation, among others.
“Over a year after the massive quake in Haiti there remains a huge need to rebuild and help the country,” said Ben Stiller. “With the generosity of Christie’s and the artists who have contributed pieces to the auction, David and I are working to help raise funds, so that the children of Haiti have an opportunity to receive the education they need to lead a better life and fulfill the potential of this vibrant and important culture.”
“When Ben and I visited Haiti earlier this year, I immediately felt compelled to do something to help,” said David Zwirner. “The art world is a generous place, and I am incredibly thankful for the extraordinary support from the artists and the arts community.”
Many of the most prominent artists working today have already committed to donating works, including: Adel Abdessemed, Francis Alÿs, Mamma Andersson, Louise Bourgeois Trust, Cecily Brown, Chuck Close, John Currin, Marlene Dumas, Urs Fischer, the Estate of Dan Flavin, Jasper Johns, the Estate of Martin Kippenberger, Jeff Koons, Glenn Ligon, Paul McCarthy, Chris Ofili, Raymond Pettibon, Neo Rauch, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Rudolf Stingel, Luc Tuymans, and others to be announced. This event will celebrate the artists who generously donated work to Artists for Haiti and the results from the previous evening’s auction, while raising funds to benefit The Stiller Foundation through contributions, sponsorship, and individual ticket sales.
The auction will be preceded by a preview exhibition at David Zwirner's New York gallery from Tuesday, September 6 to Saturday, September 10. The evening will commence with a presentation by a noted guest on the current situation in Haiti, followed by a musical performance. A special catalogue will be produced together with Christie’s, who has generously waived its standard commission fees for Artists for Haiti.
The auction will be preceded by a preview exhibition at David Zwirner's New York gallery from Tuesday, September 6 to Saturday, September 10.
