With her body of work 'Reconsidering the Situation', Solaris is questioning our behaviour of living as if there were no tomorrow. Could we afford to neglect any materials in the future? Her formal interest is in the potential transformation of the trash in which she follows her own aesthetic language.

As a newcomer to Canada Sophia Solaris' observations of North American culture lie in her wonderment of the overwhelming amount of waste and debris that surrounds us; the volume of wrappings and plastic consumed daily. Fascinated with the wasteful nature of our environment she makes work that turns worthless pieces into something valuable. Her formal interest is not the trash itself, but the potential for its transformation in which she follows her own aesthetic language. In her minimal and subtle pieces she investigates the interaction and balance of color and shape.
With her body of work Reconsidering the Situation, Solaris is questioning our behaviour of living as if there were no tomorrow. Could we afford to neglect any materials in the future? Our resources are dwindling and her ideal would be to reuse everything we produce and transform into pieces of same or higher value.
ARTIST BIO:
Sophia Solaris (born 1984) is an artist from Germany, living in Kitchener, Ontario since January 2011. She received her final degree in July 2011 from the State Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, Germany. She took part in several exhibitions in Germany and is preparing for her solo exhibition in Buehl, Germany in 2012. This exhibition at Cambridge Galleries is her first in Canada.
