Robert Smithson

Centrum Beeldende Kunst (CBK), Emmen

In the context of the Land Art Contemporary program, the exhibition 'Broken Circle-Spiral Hill Revisited' provides a unique picture of the creation and meaning of one of the most important and most complex works ever produced by the artist: a selection of rarely or never previously exhibited Smithson sketches taken from various sources, including his estate, that provide a greater insight into the process of creation of the work of art and into the numerous plans never actually carried out, that preceded the eventual work. One permanent element of the exhibition is the recently completed video 'Breaking Ground: Broken Circle-Spiral Hill (1971-2011)', produced on the basis of Smithson's original instructions for direction and editing.

comunicato stampa

Precisely 40 years ago this year, the American artist Robert Smithson produced his world-famous work of art Broken Circle/Spiral Hill in Emmen. Robert Smithson created his 'earthwork' in the sand quarry run by the De Boer company in Emmerschans, near Emmen. From 17 September - 27 November 2011, the Centre for Visual Arts (CBK) in Emmen will be dedicating a major exhibition to this subject. Roel Arkesteijn is curator of the exhibition.

Exhibition
The exhibition ‘Robert Smithson in Emmen - Broken Circle/Spiral Hill Revisited' in the Centre for Visual Arts (CBK) in Emmen will provide a unique picture of the creation and meaning of one of the most important and most complex works ever produced by Robert Smithson. Documentation and original work, for example, reveal Smithson’s interest in geology, the position of the work within his artistic career, the various restorations the work has undergone and Smithson’s importance to subsequent generations of artists. The exhibition contains a selection of rarely or never previously exhibited Smithson sketches taken from various sources, including his estate, that provide a greater insight into the process of creation of the work of art and into the numerous plans never actually carried out, that preceded the eventual work.

The exhibition has been compiled partly on the basis of research material for the book Robert Smithson. Art in Continual Movement, to be published on 27 November 2011 by Alauda Publications.

Also on view at the CBK Emmen
One permanent element of the exhibition is the recently completed video Breaking Ground: Broken Circle/Spiral Hill (1971-2011), produced on the basis of Smithson’s original instructions for direction and editing; the final editing was undertaken by Nancy Holt. The exhibition will form a diptych with the exhibition ‘The Ultraperiferic' (SKOR | Foundation for Art and the Public Domain) that will be held simultaneously at the CBK Emmen.

Lectures
Together with the exhibition, CBK Emmen will be organizing a programme of lectures by various international artists, and others.

Shuttle bus to Broken Circle/Spiral Hill
During a number of weekends, a shuttle bus will carry visitors between the exhibition and the sand quarry where Broken Circle/Spiral Hill itself can be seen.
