comunicato stampa

Printed Matter is pleased to present the exhibition Books and prints + Obstructed drawings by artist Rick Myers. The show features a wide selection of artists’ books along with his notes & workings, and a newly created video piece. The occasion also marks the launch of a new deluxe portfolio by Myers.

Myers’ focus, as an artist working in the medium of books, returns to themes of process and remainder. Using a set of elemental tools, he creates a sort of amplification in the convergence of information, subject, material & thought. His publications act as the site of various performances or ‘studio actions’ during which inks and residues are prepared and then impressed at the strike of a hammer or under the force of an industrial steel press. He leaves bite marks through one publication. In another he exposes photographic paper to a monitor-image of Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau, the last photo of the scientist before he lost his eyesight following his optical sun experiments. For Myers what counts—residual marking and the traces of an after-image—indicates an object coming into creation as much as the finished work at hand.

The exhibition also marks the launch of a newly created portfolio from Myers, Looking at the sun with a prepared lens + Obstructed drawing, an extension of previous themes. The piece, which is housed in a dossier folder, consists of six 9 x 12” digital C-prints and an original pencil drawing. The work is the result of two obstructions—one of sunlight as it is obscured by a smoked optical lens and the second caused by the lens itself as it impedes the pencil movement of a second hand.

Myers has also created two new Xerox booklets—Exercises in Horizon, Time, Feedback (9th July 2010) and AFTERIMAGES—to coincide with the opening of the exhibition. The latter is a new artists’ book made in correspondence with Douglas Blazek, the prolific and influential poet and publisher, who is recognized as being an instrumental force in the 'Mimeograph Revolution' of the 1960’s. The book is built from their informal exchange of words and drawings, resulting in a work that speaks to the nature of collaboration, understanding and interpretation.

Many works in the show, including affordably priced zines and deluxe editions, are available for purchase. A selection of titles include: AFTERIMAGES, Bite Marks in Paper from Nieves, Catalogue A, and Announcement For A Poem with Ben Estes and Kim Gordon.

The new portfolio Looking at the sun with a prepared lens + Obstructed drawing is also available for purchase. Consisting of 6 prints and an original drawing, the work measures 14.25 x 11.25″ and retails for $800.00. It is available at the Printed Matter storefront or online here.
