Simple Interactions

Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde

The exhibition presents works by 9 Japanese artists and artists groups, mixing installations, performances and documentations, all of which examine how simple interactions can create complex systems and patterns. The purpose of this show is to present a Danish audience for an updated picture of the lively Japanese sound art scene.

comunicato stampa

Sound art is a blossoming art form in Denmark, and the influence of the Japanese sound art scene is significant. On the whole, sound is a global target area, where Japan has asserted itself strongly both in art, design and industry. Therefore, the Museum of Contemporary Art has invited to our country a group of Japanese sound artists to contribute to the exhibition Simple Interactions. Sound Art from Japan, which will be the largest overall presentation in Denmark of sound art from Japan up to now.

The exhibition Simple Interactions. Sound Art from Japan presents works by 9 Japanese artists and artists groups. The exhibition mixes installations, performances and documentations, all of which examine how simple interactions can create complex systems and patterns.

Works and performances by the following artists:

Yuji DOGANE - Yukio FUJIMOTO - Atsuhiro ITO - Soichiro MIHARA + Hiroko MUGIBAYASHI + Kazuki SAITA - Atsushi NISHIJIMA - Jio SHIMIZU - Toshiya TSUNODA - Tetsuya UMEDA - Miki YUI

The past decade has been characterized by a rise of sound art as an artistic discipline that is about to establish its own traditions within the framework of contemporary art. Japanese artists like Ryoji Ikeda, Yukio Fujimoto, Akio Suzuki, Omoto Yoshihide, Merzbow and Ryuichi Sakamoto have been essential for the development of this artistic discipline. But where is the Japanese sound art today? The purpose of this exhibition is to present a Danish audience for an updated picture of the lively Japanese sound art scene.

The sound art discipline received strong international exposure with exhibitions like Sound Art – Sound as Media at the NTT ICC in Tokyo 2000, Sonic Boom – The Art of Sound at the Hayward Gallery in London 2000 and Sounding Spaces – 9 Sound Installations at the NTT ICC in Tokyo 2003. Also at the Museum of Contemporary Art there has been a special focus on sound art over the years, including the exhibition series SoundImages 1991-2004, where two Japanese artists, Akio Suzuki and Junko Wada have been represented. But there have not been previous group exhibitions with Japanese sound artists in Danmark.
