The current photographic series /FOTOGRAFIN/ (photographer) of Laura Bielau develops as a continuation of her preceding series /COLOR LAB CLUB/ (2008), which focuses on the history of photography and the artist's own relationship to the medium. Galerie Emmanuel Post, Leipzig, now exhibits parts of the earlier series in combination with the new work /FOTOGRAFIN/.
The starting point of /FOTOGRAFIN/ was an intensive examination of Albert Renger-Patzsch's book "Die Welt ist schön" (1928). Following his objective photographs, Bielau shapes her individual vision with reference to his work (animals, humans, nature, objects, architecture, technology, and symbols). Without recourse in commentary on the history of photography, the modular references to his subjects demonstrate the obvious interaction through complexity and integration in the field of photography. The New Objectivity and the documentary as narrative structure are embedded and amplified through concrete references. The reflection of one's own position as the photographer marks the beginning of the precisely structured series. The juxtaposition of a snail and the artist reading on a couch in her studio brings about a sense of identity. These images are succeeded by objects, still lifes, landscapes, and portraits which in their conceptually concise combination offer a multifaceted framework for reading images based on the consideration of their interdependency.
Laura Bielau, born in Halle/Saale, 1981, studied with Prof. Timm Rautert and is finishing her post-graduate studies with Prof. Peter Piller at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. She exhibited her work at solo shows at the Goethe Institute Helsinki, the Photographic Gallery Hippolyte, Helsinki (2007), and at the Galerie Emmanuel Post (2005, 2008, 2011). National and international group exhibitions include: 'Marion Ermer Preis', Neues Museum, Weimar (2008); 'gute aussichten . junge deutsche fotografie', Haus der Photographie, Deichtorhallen, Hamburg; Goethe Institute, Washington, USA; DZ Bank, Frankfurt/Main (2008/2009); 'NOIR COMPLEX - City, Story, Destruction & Death', Magazin 4, Bregenzer Kunstverein, Bregenz, Austria; Brandenburgischer Kunstverein, Potsdam
(2010).
