The artist's video Beige utilizes the simplicity of the still image and an understated narrative to explore the color beige and its context within the artist's own life, her perception of society, and ultimately, the universe.
Hanne Lippard’s video Beige utilizes the simplicity of the still image and an understated narrative to explore the color beige and its context within the artist’s own life, her perception of society, and ultimately, the universe.
Although the video starts by focusing on the color, it soon becomes part of a larger discussion as the artist draws upon her past life experiences. A former Starbucks employee, Lippard reveals a sub-culture she encountered on the job she terms The Beige, that camouflage themselves in this muted hue. She formulates hypotheses regarding the role of this particular color as a reflection of the “average” human psyche. The robotic delivery of the narration coupled with the flashing stock photographs distance a viewer from Lippard despite the personal disclosures of her experiences with this paler shade of pale. In Beige, what begins as a simple discussion on the nature of a typically plain color becomes a complex journey of personal and societal identity as the artist explores what it means to be monotone.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born 1984, England
Hanne Lippard received a degree in graphic design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, the Netherlands in 2010. Select solo and group exhibitions include Madame Realism, Maastricht, the Netherlands; Locus, Suri Lehtinen Gallery, Berlin; Again, A Time Machine, Bristol, UK; and Letter of Refusal, Amsterdam. This is the first presentation of her work in the United States.
