Knot Naught Alastair MacLennan A Retrospective

This major retrospective of the work of Alastair MacLennan will present work from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, alongside a series of new interventions/actuations, which will run each Tuesday throughout the period of the exhibition.

Alastair MacLennan has established an International reputation in performance art practice by exhibiting widely throughout the world. MacLennan is recognised as having greatly advanced the position of performance art in Ireland through his practice and teachings, and has influenced artists of all ages and disciplines.

MacLennanx{2019}s Performance art work, dating from the 1970x{2019}s, is in some instances supplemented by associated temporary installations that may include found objects, raw materials, found and manipulated sound, etc. Performances have taken place in various venues, such as performance festivals, streets, woods, disused buildings and galleries and have varied in duration from a few minutes to 144 hours non-stop. Sometimes the audience is a non-art one, and may not recognise the event as being art; at other times, such as when he represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale, the audience has been made up almost exclusively of people with an informed interest in contemporary visual art.

This exhibition will address the resulting fundamental problem of how to represent retrospectively work which cannot by its very nature be shown, cannot be recreated, and evidence of which exists only in fragmentary documentary form.

The exhibition opens on 23 January 2003 from 7pm x{2013} 9pm, and runs until Saturday 1 March 2003, Tuesday to Saturday, 10.00am x{2013} 6.00pm. ENTRANCE FREE.

OBG has an Espresso Bar and range of periodicals and funky postcards for sale.
