This exhibition highlights a selection of Siena's production from the past twelve years including twenty small and medium paintings on aluminum, small drawings and two larger wall drawings executed on site in the Walter Galleries. Prior to the opening of his exhibition Siena will be in residence at the San Francisco Art Institute to teach a two-week intensive drawing course. Siena will also present a lecture to students and the public at the SFAI lecture hall, Friday, January 24, at 4:30 pm.
James Siena is known for his intricate abstract paintings of repetitious geometric forms derived through sets of specific pictorial strategies. Siena refers to these strategies as algorithms, sets of strict guidelines he devises to make meticulously rendered drawings and enamel paintings. Working from his own lexicon of prescribed nesting devices, mazes, grids, latticework, spirals, ellipses, or key patterns, each algorithm elicits a complex composition to achieve various visual effects, often described as hypnotic or even mesmerizing.
