In this duo show, Elaine Lévy Project introduces two young artists of the same generation, whose work was never juxtaposed before. Althought their backgrounds and their aesthetics are quite different, they share nonetheless a common reflexion on contemporary collage and its relationship with sculpture.
Elena Damiani’s work is using obvious collages techniques, based on archival material, most precisely ancient architecture books. At first glance, the relation with volumes and space seems to be rather topical and symbolic. But actually, the constructions of collages, in stratas and superpositions, share a common approach with architecture. Moreover, she tends now to include geometrical objects next to the collages or to find strategies to concretely occupy the space.
On the opposite, Aloïs Godinat seems closer to the language of sculpture. His sparse interventions create a dialogue with the space they take place in. His solo shows need to be seen as a whole, with a global point of view, and involve the visitor circulation. Nonetheless, his use of pieces of torn posters and rolled posters can be seen litterally as an extrapolation of collage techniques for the manual alteration of found images. The more relevant difference between the two works is indeed the scale, a binomial opposition between a micro and a macro intervention on recycled images.
Elena Damiani is showing a new series that prolounges the exhibition she did at Selma Feriani Gallery in London, called The Second Treasury of Stanleth.
