Live art and performance's relationship with photography and documentation. CAZ, the Penzance-based, artist-led initiative presents a live art archive featuring works produced in the region since 1996: a display of performance for camera.
This project will explore live art and performance’s relationship with photography and documentation.
CAZ, the Penzance-based, artist-led initiative presents a live art archive featuring works produced in the region since 1996. Projects featured have been co-produced and/or hosted by Newlyn Art Gallery in partnership with Art Surgery and ArtDept.
Alongside this archive will be a display of performance for camera. Manuel Vason’s collaborations have produced some of the most iconic images of live art, bridging photography and performance. There will also be a series of images created by St Just-based artists, Zierle & Carter, while on a residency at The Banff Centre, Canada.
At the centre of this exhibition will be a performance space for a live art version of Transition, our regular opportunity for artists to test new ideas in the gallery while visitors look on. After five performance weeks, documentation of the activity will be displayed for the remainder of the exhibition.

MANUEL VASON WITH ZIERLE & CARTER (London/Cornwall)
Tuesday 6th - Saturday 10th December
Vason will use Transition to develop the idea of a ‘double image’ through a site-specific collaborative process with Zierle & Carter, working in various sites around Penzance and throughout Cornwall. The outcomes of each day will be on display in the gallery the following day. There will be opportunities throughout the week in the afternoon to talk to the artists.
Manuel Vason’s collaborations with UK and international artists have become some of the most iconic images representing Live Art, bridging photography and performance to create a hybrid artform. The images presented as part of this exhibition are collaborations with artists, who have previously presented work in Penzance. This specific selection of images also marks the development in Vason’s practice over the past decade in terms of methodologies of creative process, from using 8 x10 Polaroid in instantly responsive collaborations to more extensively dialogue and exchange based modes of collaboration and from that to creating work with other practitioners through leading group workshops and taking on residencies.
