Drawing and Sculpture by Amedeo Modigliani. Having trained in traditional art education, his distinctive and unique drawings were refined by contact with the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. The exhibition features twenty-one drawings and two sculptures by Modigliani, all from private collections.
Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor. Having trained in traditional art education, his distinctive and unique drawings were refined by contact with the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. Using various media such as pencil, pastel, charcoal and Indian ink, his sketches were executed on paper and canvas.
Modigliani began to study painting at the age of fourteen, moving to Paris in 1906. In addition to painting, he also devoted himself to stone carving from 1909 to 1914. His sculptures feature mainly heads or crouching caryatid figures. He returned to painting with the outbreak of the First World War and his finest works, mainly nudes and portraits, were produced in the last five years of his short life. These works are characterised by their elongated forms, linear qualities, earthy colours, and a superb sense of rhythmic vitality.
Having lived for only thrity-five years, Modigliani's extant works are rare. The present exhibition features twenty-one drawings and two sculptures by Modigliani, all from private collections. The guest curator of the show is Ms. Catherine Kwai.
