comunicato stampa

Western Project is proud to present Los Angeles artist Nancy Riegelman with an expansive body of work from the past two years. Exploring new territory, and materials, the exhibition will include paintings and drawings, as well as floor sculptures made of wood and finished in platinum. Historically the artist has used her own body rhythms to construct images; primarily the breath as a measure of discrete mark making. In the drawi...ngs each mark is the length of her own breath, but now the paper is transparent, skin like, hung in rows, unframed; referencing the corporal nature of the human body.

The images in the paintings and sculptures are now ellipses, more organic than perfect, yet each a formal and metaphoric shape. Her classic and reductive structures are composed of thousands of hand drawn contiguous pencil lines. The paintings are made by slowly moving around the canvas; as a performative and intuitive process, the lines are built outward from the center. Contrasting the ephemeral visual quality of the paintings, Riegelman’s solid wood sculptures resonate light from their platinum surfaces. Called, Platinum Tears, they hug the floor in oval like shapes, again imperfect and natural in form. The gleaming platinum material recalls Yves Klein’s intense and opulent works, or Carl Andre’s shimmering copper floor sculptures.

Marking time is in the lineage of artists such as On Kawara, Roman Opalka and John Cage. Riegelman’s formalistic practice is not a traditional Western use of illusion, time and movement. It comes from travelling and living in Japan, Thailand and India. It is about presence and awareness, and record and evidence of being.

Riegelman is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Louvre, and has shown in Paris, France, Bombay, India, Seoul, Korea, at Art Center College of Art and Design, Pasadena, the Los Angeles County Art Museum, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Long Beach Museum, and many other galleries and museums through out the United States.
