Time to Act!
Works From the Migros Museum for Contemporary Art Zurich

Curator: Karin Pernegger

Since its foundation in 1996 the Migros Museum for Contemporary Art has been a space for reflection and production. Contemporary art here is explicitly embedded in a societal and social context. For the first time in Austria a large part of the core of this 500-work collection is on show. An extensive Kunsthalle Krems exhibition on the topic of ‘social action’ will consist solely of items from the Migros Museum for Contemporary Art collection.
The artworks prompt discussion on future-oriented value creation, sustainability, global justice and social responsibility, principles that are also part of Migros’s corporate philosophy. Not only is Migros the biggest Swiss retail trader, it is one of the best-known private sponsors in the areas of culture, society, education, leisure and business. The exhibition includes socio-politically oriented works by Theo Altenberg, Lothar Baumgarten, Alighiero Boetti, Christine Borland, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Phil Collins, Elmgreen & Dragset, Fischli/Weiss, Gilbert & George, Jens Haaning, Mathilde ter Heijne, Josephine Meckseper, Markus Schinwald, Andy Warhol and many more.

Walter Vopava

Curator: Hans-Peter Wipplinger

Walter Vopava (b. 1948) is one of the major proponents of New Abstraction in Austria. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, he lives and works in Vienna and Berlin. His painting explores the perception of surface colour as an autonomous aesthetic event. While his works of the 1980s still had figurative aspects, in the ’90s he explored light, colour and atmosphere, developing the idea of the painting as a colour space. Heavy, dark fields of colour are brought into relation with lighter, glowing areas. The result is deep, meditative spaces suggesting a mysterious ‘beyond’. Walter Vopava does not start with an idea and illustrate it, rather the idea takes shape during the act of painting. There is nothing arbitrary about his works, however, for they pertain to specific systems that are never absolute. His current cycle of pictures produced for the central hall of the Kunsthalle Krems, for instance, relates to specific features of the exhibition space.
