Nelle sue opere Renata Lucas si interroga sullo spazio che viviamo, sulla nostra percezione di esso e le relazioni che vi si instaurano, nella consapevolezza che non esistano risposte oggettive da trovare ma solo possibilità da sperimentare. I suoi progetti consistono in interventi, a volte invasivi a volte sottili, nelle architetture e negli spazi con cui l’artista interagisce e sono sempre il frutto di un lungo processo fatto di esperimenti, continue mediazioni e fallimenti. Ogni suo lavoro è un tentativo di sospendere le regole, di misurare i “limiti” delle possibilità, utilizzando i limiti stessi come contenuto da sviluppare di volta in volta in nuove direzioni.

Invitata a confrontarsi con lo spazio di Peep-Hole, Renata Lucas ha ideato un progetto che è il risultato di un’esperienza diretta del luogo, dell’analisi della sua storia recente, delle sue modalità operative come istituzione d'arte e della relazione tra le persone che lo vivono e del lavoro che lì svolgono.

Con un intervento minimo e quasi “invisibile”, lo spazio espositivo viene profondamente trasformato dall’artista brasiliana che lo collega alla sua casa di Rio De Janeiro creando un cortocircuito spazio-temporale nel quale l’assenza fisica dell’artista si trasforma in “presenza” che modifica lo spazio espositivo e ne scandisce i tempi. Ogni attività svolta all’interno dello spazio sarà condizionata dai ritmi quotidiani dell'artista nella sua abitazione, a una distanza non solo fisica ma anche temporale.

Third Time segna uno snodo cruciale nel percorso intrapreso a oggi da Peep-Hole, nato proprio con il presupposto di operare mettendo al centro di ogni sua attività l’artista e la sua opera. Renata Lucas ha portato alle estreme conseguenze tale assunto, con un progetto in cui lo spazio, il suo funzionamento e la sua attività giornaliera sono completamente nelle mani dell’artista.

Third Time è il primo di un ciclo di progetti che da qui a fine stagione (luglio 2012) anticiperà il trasferimento di Peep-Hole da Via Panfilo Castaldi in una nuova sede. Da questo momento in poi una traccia di ogni progetto espositivo resterà visibile anche dopo che la mostra sarà conclusa. I progetti che seguiranno si confronteranno così con i precedenti e attenderanno i successivi stratificando la storia e le attività dello spazio.

Renata Lucas è nata nel 1971 a Ribeirao Preto, Brasile. Vive e lavora a Rio de Janeiro.
Tra le recenti mostre personali ricordiamo: Ernst Schering Foundation Art Award, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlino (2010), Resident, Gasworks, Londra (2007), Falha, REDCAT, Los Angeles (2007). Renata Lucas ha partecipato a numerose mostre collettive, tra le quali: The Spiral and the Square. Exercises on translatability, Bonniers Konsthall, Stoccolma (2011), Anna Strand/Renata Lucas, Malmo Konstall, Malmo (2010), Short Time, Half House, Barcellona (2009), Time as Matter, MACBA, Barcellona (2009), The World as a Stage, ICA Boston (2008) e Tate Modern, Londra (2007). Ha inoltre partecipato a importanti manifestazioni internazionali come la 12a Biennale di Istanbul, Istanbul (2011), la 53a Biennale di Venezia, Venezia (2009), la Yokohama Triennale, Yokohama (2008), la 16a Biennale di Sydney, Sydney (2008), la 27a Biennale di San Paolo (2006). Nel 2009 è stata vincitrice del Dena Foundation Art Award, Parigi, ed è stata selezionata per lo IASPIS International Artists Studio Program, Stoccolma. Nel 2010 ha partecipato al programma The Magnificent Seven al Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco.

In her works Lucas questions the space we inhabit, our perception of it and the relationships that are established within it, as she is aware that there are no objective answers to be found but merely possibilities to test. Her projects consist of interventions – invasive in some cases and subtle in others – in the architecture and spaces with which the artist interacts, and they are always the outcome of a long process of experimentation, ongoing mediation and failures. Each work is an attempt to suspend the rules, to measure the “limits” of possibilities, using those very limits as contents to be developed again and again in new directions.

Invited to engage Peep-Hole's exhibition space, Lucas has made a project that is the result of her direct experience with the place and in-depth analysis of its history, its function as Art Center and the relationship among the people who inhabit it and the work they do there.

Through a minimal, almost “invisible” intervention, the exhibition venue will be profoundly transformed by the Brazilian artist, connecting it with her flat in Rio de Janeiro and creating a spatio-temporal short circuit in which the artist’s physical absence is transformed into a “presence” that alters the exhibition space and marks its time. Each activity performed within the space will be influenced by the artist’s everyday pace in her home, at a distance that is not only physical but also temporal.

Third Time marks a crucial turning point in the course undertaken so far by Peep-Hole, which was established with the intent of focusing all its activities on the artists and their works. Renata Lucas has taken this principle to extremes with a project in which the space, the way it functions and its daily activities are totally in the hands of the artist.
Third Time is the first in a series of projects that, from now to the end of the season (July 2012), will anticipate Peep-Hole’s move from Via Panfilo Castaldi to a new venue. From now on, a trace of every exhibition project will be visible even after the end of the show. The upcoming projects will thus engage with the previous ones and will await the ones that will follow, stratifying the history and activities of the space.
